For 40 years, Steve Burrill has been involved in the growth and development of the biotechnology industry. Steve Burrill, the CEO of the merchant bank Burrill & Company and the publisher of The Burrill Report, sees this as a time of both change and opportunity as the rules under which the biotech industry operates are being rewritten.

Daniel Levine, Web Editor for The Burrill Report, spoke to Steve Burrill about the evolving environment for the biotech industry, what companies will need to do be successful going forward, and his upcoming supersession at the 2009 BIO International Convention.

An innovation climate is very much like that of any other climate. The right conditions and influences can set the stage for truly transformative ideas. This is particularly true in the life sciences, where ideas have the potential to bring about dramatic improvements in healthcare, energy, global food demand and industrial processes-but only if circumstances allow these ideas to be properly nurtured and developed.

The Scientific American Worldview Project represents a unique and fresh look at biotech innovation across the globe. It has established a robust framework for examining the ingredients that can help foster an innovative climate in a country. Those ingredients include (among others): the amount of intellectual property protection, the amount of commercial biotech activity in a country, how easy it is to do business, education and workforce resources, and the amount of money spent by companies and governments on research and development.

A report by the Worldview Project is set to be released May 20, 2009 at the BIO International Convention in Atlanta.

For purposes of the 2009 BIO International Convention, ProMexico (www.ProMexico.gob.mx) is collaborating with the Biotechnology Center of Excellence Corporation (www.BioAmericas.org) to serve the needs of the Mexican delegation and interested BIO participants.

Mexico is the fifth richest region in biodiversity in the world with a long tradition of research in biological sciences. Mexico’s commercial biotechnology activities are equally as varied. Of the approximately 180 firms that develop and/or use modern biotechnology in Mexico, 31% are in the agricultural area, 23% in environmental applica­tions, 18% in health care, 18% in food, and 10% in other areas. Large international firms with biotechnology-related activities currently operate in Mexico, particularly in the agricultural area.

Mexico is experiencing a rapid growth in biotechnology applications to human healthcare, agriculture, marine resources, energy production and other areas. Each of these sectors are benefiting from modernization and innovation programs involving research institutions and private industry.
